Propane has a narrow range of flammability when compared with other petroleum products. In order to ignite, the propane/air mix must contain from 2.2 to 9.6 percent propane vapor. If the mixture contains less than 2.2 percent gas, it is too lean to burn. If it contains more than 9.6 percent, it is too rich to burn.

The issue of propane pricing transparency has been raised several times this winter and I would like to offer some ideas to make this a non issue for you.

Most propane marketers have multiple pricing levels with volume discounts to customers based on annual consumption.   If you call your propane company and identify yourself they will gladly tell you your price per gallon.   If you call a company where you are not a customer, simply provide them with your annual consumption in gallons, town that you live in (to ensure they service your area) and size tank that you lease from your supplier.    Once a company knows your usage, your town and the tank information they can provide you with a price immediately.

The propane industry is comprised of 45 or so competitive businesses in each of the New England states, and there is competition for customers business.  It pays to make an informed decision and read the contract carefully before choosing a supplier.
